History with all senses

Taste, smell and touch history at Conner Prairie Interactive History Park, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Two hundred wooded acres and five interactive attractions in Fishers will submerse students into life, 19th-century style. Mingle with folks in Prairietown, get close to animals in the Encounter Barn, handcraft goods or learn about the Lenape and Delaware Indians and how to throw a tomahawk. With special events and workshops year-round, students can constantly learn what life was like way back when.

Get rhythm 

Ever wonder what an African Talking Drum sounds like or where the idea of drums and rhythm comes from? With Rhythm! Discovery Center, a project of the Percussive Arts Society, student groups can learn all these things and more. Containing a unique display of percussion instruments and artifacts from around the world, Rhythm!’s exhibit space allows connecting percussion with everyday life through performances, observation and hands-on chances to beat the drum, xylophone, cowbell or whatever instrument is lying around.

The world in Indianapolis 

Explore the world of fossils in the Dinosphere or visit one of the other great exhibits at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest children’s museum in the U.S. Five stories of interactive exhibits, performances and special events make this museum an educational and fun experience. The museum’s newest permanent exhibit, “Treasures of the Earth,” allows students to explore Capt. William Kidd’s pirate shipwreck, the Terra Cotta Warriors of China and the tomb of Seti I.

On stage

One of the largest active community theaters in the nation, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre offers a full season of shows for everyone. With productions such as Willy Wonka and Guys and Dolls, students can enjoy a live performance while learning to appreciate the art of theater. In addition, students can take part in Junior Civic, the only year-round theater education program in Indiana. Performance courses nurture an appreciation for the performing arts and aid students in developing characteristics needed for life outside the classroom.
